Estimates and Pricing Policies:
Most of my work is charged by the hour, but I also do jobs with estimates or fixed prices when needed.
For larger jobs charged by the hour, I usually give an estimated range of material and labour costs to the customer before proceeding with the work.
For estimates, most of my larger jobs are custom renovation or repair jobs and a lot of time goes into producing estimates for those jobs. So, to calculate the most accurate prices possible for my clients, I take the time to meet with my clients in-person to discuss their needs. Then I spend a lot of time to research materials and solutions for my clients, before the number crunching even begins.
I do a lot of jobs where some of the work may include hidden items behind the walls or floors, so it’s not always possible to give accurate estimates until the walls or floors are opened. However, generally I can give the customer an idea of what to expect with hidden items beforehand and give the customer an estimated range of what to expect for the costs.
For small repair items, I usually charge by the hour, because sometimes it takes less time to do the actual small repair than the time it takes to do the estimate or to travel to the customer’s site for the estimate. However, usually I can provide an estimated cost range for materials and labour over the phone, before proceeding with the small repair.
So, if you have any questions about estimates, pricing, and related policies, or if you would like to schedule an in-person consultation, please contact me to discuss your needs.
For current hourly rates and related questions, please contact me and I will send you more information.
WSIB Insurance and Liability Insurance Policies:
WSIB: In 2012, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board made WSIB insurance mandatory in the province of Ontario for most self-employed renovation workers for jobsite accidents. I have WSIB and I am fully covered for any injuries that may happen to me while working on jobsites. Please contact me for more information.
Liability Insurance: I have full liability insurance that covers me for accidental property damage and other related business liabilities. Please contact me for more information or for proof of insurance.
Deposit Policies:
For existing customers: I usually don’t ask for advanced deposits on labour for jobs to secure the job for existing customers. Also, I typically won’t ask for advanced material deposits unless I am ordering and purchasing non-refundable and non-returnable materials for that job, like a custom cabinet for example.
For new customers: I will sometimes ask a new customer for a deposit for new jobs on a case-by-case basis to cover the cost of materials and some labour. I work on a floating schedule, so if a new customer wants me to reserve a specific time slot for them, I will often ask the new customer for a deposit to reserve a time slot for them. Also, I will sometimes give a new customer an interim invoice for larger projects, instead of invoicing everything at the end.
Payment Policies:
The following are the types of payments that I currently accept and some of my policies regarding payments. For alternate payment methods or if you have any payment questions, please discuss them with me before the job is started. Please make all payments payable to “Mark Routhier”. All payments are due in full upon receiving the invoice, unless otherwise discussed with me in advance. I do not offer financing or long-term payment plans.
Interac E-transfers: Most of my customers prefer to pay with Interac E-transfers and it is my preferred payment method also. Please send any E-transfers to my email address (mark@marrenovation.ca). If you’re registered for Interac Autodeposit the payment doesn’t need a password, but if it does require one, please send the password in a separate email. Also, since some financial institutions put maximum daily transfer limits on E-transfers, I do accept partial payments with more than one E-transfer, but please discuss that with me first.
Personal Cheques and Business/Corporate cheques: For most existing repeat customers I accept cheques as payment. For new customers, I will except payment by cheque on a case-by-case basis. For larger jobs, I may ask a customer to pay with a certified cheque, bank draft or money order, but I will discuss that first.
Business Registration & HST:
My business is registered with the federal government, and as such I am required to charge 13% HST on my services. For more information about this, please contact me to discuss it.
